KPHA Scholarship Grant Program

Congratulations to the Leib 4H-Club, Edna KS—2023 KHPA Scholarship Recipients. Edna is located in Labette County in the southeast corner of the state. The county shares its southern border with Oklahoma. The area has always had honey producers; however, this is the first year the club will be offering honey bees/beekeeping as a 4-H project. According to club leader, Tracy Maxson, the group hopes not only to learn about bees and beekeeping, but to teach others about beekeeping as well. With no experience but a willingness to learn and do the hard work, this group of young people is excited to begin this new adventure. David Korver of Almont, KS, will serve as the mentor for the club for the next two years.

Applications for the grant will be accepted from schools and community organizations, clubs, or groups wishing to explore the world of honeybees and beekeeping. This one-time grant is being made available to school sponsored organizations, 4-H Clubs, Scout troops, master gardeners, teacher organizations, master naturalists, historical societies, extension offices, etc. The grant’s purpose is to promote education and the establishment of an apiary in the state of Kansas.

St. Andrews is a small Episcopal church in Derby, KS. Blessed with five acres of land in the middle of our suburban town and our goal is to utilize the land to the betterment of those in our community. We will be starting a community garden for anyone to join but will specifically offer plots to an inner-city organization based in Wichita that helps those with severe mental illness. Gardening and being outdoors has immense benefits for people’s physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing and we will be teaching them how to grow and prepare their own food. The bees will be an integral part to this process as we will be able to show the relationship pollinators have with food production. Our parish is also the meeting location for a local Girl Scout troop and a 4-H club. We will partner with them on beekeeping education

Applications for the 2025 grant will be accepted between May 20, 2025 to October 20, 2025.
